The 2nd Annual Great Letterboxing History Hunt of Fairfield County

The Second Annual Great Letterboxing History Hunt began on Friday, May 15, 2015, and ends with a festive family get-together at the Wilton Historical Society on Sunday, May 31, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Letterboxing is a treasure hunt-style quest that offers a chance to learn about reading maps, following clues, and local history.

The event is a collaboration between the Fairfield Museum and History Center, the New Canaan Historical Society, the Norwalk Historical Society, Ridgefield’s Keeler Tavern Museum, the Weston Historical Society, the Westport Historical Society, and the Wilton Historical Society.

All you need is a nifty signature stamp and an ink pad. Anytime during the weeks of May 15 – May 31, get your stamp and ink pad, go to one of the historical organizations listed and pick up the official Letterboxing History Hunt Map. The clues you find at each site will lead you a letterbox hidden on the property. Inside the letterbox is a journal and a stamp. Use the site’s location stamp to record your visit on your official Letterboxing History Hunt Map, and then use your own signature stamp to record your visit in the journal in the letterbox.

Participants who stamp their official Map at all seven locations will be eligible for a prize, and will be entered in a drawing for a wonderful grand prize. All prizes will be awarded at the Wilton Historical Society from 3:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 31. (Don’t forget to bring your fully stamped map!)

 
Family Day Cake Contest: Bake What You Love!
 

Date: Saturday, June 13

When: 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM

Where: Museum Campus

Cost: Free (fees for pony rides and food)

 

As part of Family Day on Saturday, June 13, 2015 (details below), Keeler Tavern Museum invites all bakers to participate in a cake contest. Here’s your chance to show off your baking skills!

There’s no fee to participate, but we do ask you to register so we know how many cakes to expect. Register online by clicking here then get cooking!

Entries: Please submit a regular-sized cake (not to exceed 13” x 17”, including base) to be judged on appearance and a second, smaller cake, to be cut up for the judges to taste. No refrigerated cakes, please! Please include a list of ingredients on a separate sheet or index card.

Drop-off: Cakes must be brought to the Museum’s Garden House on Saturday, June 13, 9:00-11:00 a.m.

Judging: All cakes will be judged for appearance and taste by a select panel of judges. Judging takes place Saturday, June 13, 2:00-2:30 p.m.

Eating: After judging, your cake will be served to the event attendees.

Family Day: Celebrity Visits the Cannon Ball House

Fun for the whole family! Immerse yourself in history from Colonial days to the Gilded Age, with historic reenactors, period crafts, hands-on demonstrations, games, food, music, period dances, a cake contest, antique cars, pony-rides and petting zoo, face painting, and much more.

Children entering grades 1 to 3 learn about Colonial life in New England through a variety of hands-on, age-appropriate crafts, games, songs, stories and foods.

 

Session II: July 20-24, 2015, 9:30-1:30 daily

Children entering grades 4 to 6 become “history detectives,” re-living the Battle of Ridgefield during the American Revolution through fun activities that feature the museum’s past residents and items from its collections.

 

 

 

Antiques & Treasures Sale

In our Garden House, hundreds of antiques are displayed in arranged rooms showcasing furniture, mirrors, paintings, glass, china, silver and other decorative accessories. Stroll in our glorious gardens to select furniture for your patio or terrace. Gently worn treasures suitable for a first home, apartment, or dorm may be found under the tent and in the Cass Gilbert Barn.

 

Donations and consignments, accepted between July 28th and August 3rd, may be furniture in good condition, rugs, lamps, china, glass, works of art, garden furniture, and historic memorabilia, such as maps and vintage books. We do not accept clothing, appliances, exercise machines, or current books. Inquiries about consignment and/or donation (tax letter provided) are welcomed after June 20, 2015, at 203/431-3094.
