Distinguished Lecturer Series: Author Dr. Carol R. Berkin Speaks about American and European Celebrity Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte

Date: Sunday, September 28, 2014

When: 4:00pm

Where: Keeler Tavern Museum Garden House

Cost: Lecture & Reception: $50 ($35 / Members & Students)

Lecture Only:$25 ($20 / Members, $15 Students)

Dr. Carol R. Berkin, City University of New York professor emeritus of history, will talk about her latest book Wondrous Beauty, a biography of Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, the beautiful, headstrong American wife of Napoleon Bonaparte's youngest brother, Jérôme. Betsy and Jérôme, who stopped at the Keeler Tavern in 1804, were considered the most celebrated - and scandalous - couple of their time. By drawing comparisons between Elizabeth Bonaparte’s experiences and concerns and those of today’s contemporary women, Dr. Berkin’s lecture will prompt your consideration of how gender roles are constantly evolving.

Books on the Common will have copies of Wondrous Woman  available for sale; 10% of book sale proceeds will be donated to the Museum. After a Q&A, Dr. Berkin will join guests for a Wine & Hors d’Oeuvres Reception.
