Question 18: Cannonball Express

April 18, 2020

Reenactors from the 5th Connecticut Regiment with 3-pounder grasshopper cannon, like the one used by the British at the Battle of Ridgefield.

The British aimed cannon fire at T. Keeler’s Inn because they believed:

  1. It held the largest stockpile of patriot supplies
  2. The building hid escaping patriot generals
  3. Keeler was making patriot ammunition
  4. George III would be pleased

Tradition says that when the cannonball lodged in the building’s corner post, it shifted the tavern on its foundation.
