Hartford’s Sailors and Soldiers Memorial Arch has six statues on its exterior: the sixth statue is of a slave, his shackles broken, holding a slate with the letters A,B,C on it. | Waterbury’s Soldiers’ Monument has on its south face a female figure sitting in front of an eagle whose beak supports the word Emancipation, holding a book. Her right foot rests on a cannon beside which is a broken shackle. |
