The gravestones of Betsey (left) and Edward 'Ned' (right) Armstrong in the Ridgebury Cemetery |
Ridgefield historian Jack Sanders believes that articles in the New York Tribune and the New Haven Register in 1879 provide evidence that there was an underground railroad station in Ridgefield.
What was the name of the family who ran it?
“Uncle” Ned and “Aunt” Betsey Armstrong risked arrest and imprisonment as they sheltered slaves seeking freedom from the South. Ned Armstrong has given his name to Ned’s Mountain and Ned’s Lane.
